What We Do

As Pierce County locals, we recognize the talented, skillful youth that make up our community; as well as the hard-working educators and community programs that pour into these students. With SCOPE, we aim to connect education programs with local professionals to empower students to explore the possibilities of a career in engineering and computer science. We understand that everyone has a unique journey into their STEM field, and we hope that SCOPE helps our future engineers identify their own pathway towards their future!

Our History

Supportive Community of Professional Engineers (SCOPE) was founded by Dr. Maricris Eleno-Orama and Emily Lago Anderson in 2020 as a passion project which allowed them to give back to their community. At the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic, SCOPE hosted several virtual panels for high school and undergraduate students to facilitate connection with local engineers and computer science professionals.

In 2021, SCOPE transitioned to partnering with Puget Sound educational institutions to reach students and empower them to explore career opportunities in engineering and technology. In the past year, SCOPE has partnered with many local programs to bring professional engineers into students' learning environments and bring students into exciting industry spaces!

Azure Support Escalation Engineer and Trainer, Microsoft

As a life-long learner, Emily's passion for problem solving and innovative design fostered her interest in the field of Computer Science. As an undergraduate student, Emily developed and implemented an interactive STEM education program for under-served school districts to promote academic achievement, equal opportunity, and diversity in the industry. This program continues to serve elementary schools in Santa Maria, CA. After receiving her Bachelor's degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Emily returned to Pierce County to begin her professional career at Microsoft as a Technical Support Engineer for Azure Virtual Machines. Her passion for sharing knowledge and mentoring led her to training, where she now teaches new engineers foundational concepts related to Azure Infrastructure as a Service offerings.

Emily was born and raised in Pierce County and completed her primary education in the Steilacoom Historical School District. Emily is grateful for all of the local educators who made an impact in her educational journey, and she thrives on giving back to the community that empowered her growth and learning.
